Summary

This lesson provides students with an opportunity to locate and identify the different architectural styles and terminology that exists in the community and neighborhoods that they live in.

Materials

The following items will be necessary to complete this activity:

  • a copy of the Architecture Scavenger Hunt assignment sheet for each student
  • a pen or pencil for each student

    Background for Teachers

Please be familiar with all the terms and styles listed on the scavenger hunt assignment sheet. Be able to identify, by sight, each of the required items.

    Student Prior Knowledge

Students should have been introduced to the architecture terms and styles that are listed on the scavenger hunt sheet (refer to Architecture Notes lesson plan for this information).

    Intended Learning Outcomes

This activity should reinforce and help to solidify students' knowledge of the architecture terms and styles.

    Instructional Procedures

Hand out the assignment sheet and go over it as a class. Explain that this is a homework assignment and give a reasonable deadline for which it is due. Explain that students should find these items in the neighborhoods that surround them and that it is necessary for them to write the address of each house that has the required item, on their paper--no address, no points.

    Extensions

This activity is also very fun to use as a "walking field trip" type activity if your school is within walking distance of neighborhoods.

    Assessment Plan

Give students a required number of items that they must find for full credit--there are 55 options so maybe require them to find 30. Give two points per completed answer for a total of 60 points.
