Tips for a successful Back-to-School Night

7 suggestions to make the most of it

1. Welcome parents with enthusiasm. Acknowledge your appreciation that parents have chosen your school at a time when they have more options than ever before.

2. Give them something to brag about. Share positive facts about your school, your plans and your background as an educator and member of the community.

3. Follow up with a written thank you. Send around an email signup sheet, then followup with any questions as you thank them in writing for their attendance and involvement. This not only thanks them, but has the potential to engage them and open lines of contact.

4. Promote up coming event on your bulletin boards. Highlight activities that may be of interest to parents.

5. Consult with your principal in establishing or updating a wall of fame bulletin board at your school. Include photos and brief bios of your school's most successful students. In some cases it may be a parent of a student in your class.

6. Provide a handout of 3-5 things parents can do to assure their child's success. It might include: talk with your child at dinner time, read with your child a bedtime, plan outings to museums, libraries and parks.

7. Play a variety games with your child (math, words, sports, colors, shapes, etc.) Provide online and easy-to-make examples like paper dominoes.
