WHAT IS UTAH COLLECTIONS ?
The Utah Collections Multimedia Encyclopedia is a continuing
series of
CD-ROM volumes as well as an ever-expanding world wide web site
whose
contributors include many institutions, organizations and agencies
throughout
Utah. Utah Collections serves as a storehouse of multimedia items
which
educators, professors and students can freely use in lesson plans,
reports and
projects without fear of copyright infringement.
"The project, the first of its kind for a public television station,
provides a valuable educational tool for students and teachers..." -- PBS
K-12 Learning Services Newsletter
HOW DID THE PROJECT BEGIN?
Within the video archives of public television station KUED Channel
7 and its
sister organization, KUED Media Solutions, were hours and hours of
documentaries, telecourses, and video productions -- a gold mine of
historical,
cultural, social science and geographic footage about Utah and the
Intermountain
West. KUED-TV and KUED Media Solutions wanted to be able to catalog
and recycle these materials for further use. Coupled with an expressed
need by Utah educators for easy access to resources and information about
the state for use in the classroom, the idea for a multimedia encyclopedia
was born. The resources available through UCME also address the objectives
for Utah's social studies core curriculum.
WHO IS THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM?
KUED Media Solutions, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah,
designed both the CD-ROM version and the web site and is responsible for
the cataloging of media items and their conversion into digital formats.
The production team has expertise in the areas of information processing,
database organization, instructional design, multimedia programming and
graphic design. The project has created an infrastructure which should
allow the project to continue for many years.
