Setup Problems
Why can't I run Setup? Is something wrong with the Setup Program?
Old versions of CD-ROM Reader Drivers (Extensions) may create problems
with the Setup Program.
If you have problems with the setup (if the setup alias can?t find the
setup program and/or the setup program does not run properly), you could
try opening the UCME folder and double-clicking the Setup program directly.
The best solution is to obtain and install the latest drivers.
I get a message saying, "Could not run the script 'Scriptname'
because of a problem connecting to the scripting component."
The AppleEvents Manager extension for Apple System Software 7.1 must be
included in the Extensions folder. UCME uses Applescripts for printing
and closing the database engine. If you receive this message when quitting
or printing, it usualy means you don't have the AppleEvents Manager extension
in the extensions folder.
After I install and reboot I get the message "QuickTime installation
failed because it was already installed.
QuickTime was already installed on your computer and you clicked the option
to install QuickTime in the UCME installation. You should go to the extensions
folder, inspect both QuickTime extensions with the Get Info command
and delete the older version.
There is something wrong with the program. It doesn't come up or
crashes.
The Installation program will NOT detect how much hard drive space you
have. Therefore, if you don't have enough hard drive space, the installation
will appear to complete successfully, when in actuality it was unable to
copy everything to your hard drive due to lack of space. You can try doing
a minimal install which will result in the programs' running more slowly
since they will have to run off the CD.
I get white spots on different screens or UCME runs very slowly.
UCME is a very CPU intensive program and requires 8 megabytes of RAM to
run smoothly. It will run with 5 MB of RAM but this is not enough to retain
all the graphic elements. When a graphic element cannot be loaded into
memory to be displayed, a white space is displayed in its absence. The
68030 processor-based Macs are woefully slow, anything less than this is
undoable. A 68040-based Mac is the bare minimum recommendation.
Moving the Database
Can I move the database and programs to another directory or drive?
Yes. However, you will need to modify the data source for the database
in the ODBC Setup control panel. Read the documentation for instructions
on how to do this.
When I try to modify the ODBC data sources it crashes the system.
Some of the later Mac OSes come with ODBC drivers already installed. These
drivers may not work with UCME's database engine. Since the UCME installer
will not overwrite these, you may need to manually copy them from the CD
to your extensions folder. See the installation manual for instructions
on how to do this.
WINDOWS
Setup Problems
I installed the program and rebooted but I can't find it anywhere?
Did you finish the installation including QuickTime? For Windows
3.x users, many times the Program Manager window will be on top after the
Sybase SQL Anywhere installation. YOU ARE NOT DONE after installing Sybase
SQL Anywhere. You must reboot your computer. If you minimize the Program
Manager window, you will see the UCME install screen prompting you to continue
with the installation. For Windows 95 users, the Sybase SQL Anywhere isntallation
creates a Sybase SQL Anywhere window on your desktop. Move this window
out of the way so you can see the UCME install window in order to finish
the installation. Remember, you are not done until you install QuickTime
for Windows.
I get a message in the UCME installation asking me to input the drive
letter and directory of Sybase SQL Anywhere?
If when installing Sybase SQL Anywhere, you select a different drive than
the default 'C' drive, as it continues, the UCME installation program will
not be able to find the Sybase programs. You must manually enter the drive
letter and directory of the Sybase programs.
The titles don't come up in the selection window of the browser or
I get an ODBC error.
Either the Sybase environment variables aren't active or the ODBC data
source is not pointing to the database file.
If you are presented with a Startup Menu when you boot your computer, you
may need to edit your autoexec.bat file and place any lines the Sybase
installation put in it to the sections of the file you will select on startup.
If you moved the database or program files to a different drive or directory,
you may need to modify the ODBC data source in the ODBC setup control panel.
See the instructions on how to do this.
