Standard 5
Students will understand that microorganisms range from simple to complex, are found almost everywhere, and are both helpful and harmful.
Objective 3
Identify positive and negative effects of microorganisms and how science has developed positive uses for some microorganisms and overcome the negative effects of others.

  • An Ancient Disease: Who Am I?
    Students research the causes and cures of various diseases and acknowledge the challenges facing early scientists who studied these diseases and the benefits derived from finding their cures.
  • Decomposing Microorganisms
    The decomposition of grass clippings and leaves into compost demonstrates one of the useful functions of microorganisms.
  • Diseases
    This lesson plan integrates Standard 4 of the 6th Grade Health Core (HIV and viruses) with Standard 5 of the 6th Grade Science Core (microorganisms). It introduces the concept of diseases their causes. The lesson consists of some notes, a reinforcing activity, and an assessment.
  • Jordan River field trip: Biogeography (part 4 of 4)
    This station of the field trip is subdivided into two subsections concerning the biology and geography of the Jordan river. The first section (activity A) involves historical land use and habit alteration along the Jordan river, while the second (activity B) focuses on mapping the location of native plants. Each of these activities is designed to take 30 minutes and are best facilitated by dividing the large group that arrives at the station into 2 subgroups that work with different instructors and swap activities at the 30 minute mark.
  • TRB 6:5 - Activity 6 - Microbes and Health
    This lesson is designed to acquaint students with the concept of how microorganisms cause disease.
  • TRB 6:5 – Activity 5 – Good Guys or Bad Guys
    Students will complete a variety of activities to learn about both positive and negative effects of microorganisms.
  • The Good, The Bad, and The Both
    Students will use information from articles about microorganisms and their prior knowledge to identify both the positive and negative aspects of microorganisms.
  • There are Microbes in my Food!
    Yogurt production in the classroom acts as a living example of the use of microbes in food production.
