  • Animal Adaptations—Snowshoe Hare/Cottontail Rabbit

    The students will be able to compare the traits of species for physical abilities, instinctual behaviors, and specialized body structures that increase the survival of animals in a specific environment.

    1. Analyze how structural and behavioral adaptations help organisms survive.
    2. Define structural and behavioral adaptations.
    3. Observe and identify specific adaptations of animals.
    4. Give examples of structural and behavioral adaptations.
    5. Recognize the distinct characteristics of two or more similar animals.
    6. Describe physical adaptations exhibited by two animals and compare their differences.
  • Building Electromagnets and Simple Motors
    The students will be able to compare permanent magnets and electromagnets through a hands‐on experience by building an electromagnet and a motor. They will also have the chance to try several experiments with an electromagnet that they create themselves!
  • Candies R Us
    An activity creating boxes for candy helps students understand measuring volume and surface area.
  • Changing Matter in Colonial Days
    In the following activities, the students will experience making some of the products used in Colonial life. They will also see whether the product was produced by a physical or chemical change.
  • Food Matters
    In the following activities, the students will experience seeing bread made and experience making butter. They will also see whether the product was produced by a physical or chemical change.
  • I Will Survive!
    This lesson helps students understand specialized structure and variation.
  • If the Shape Fits
    The use of manipulatives helps students create various geometric shapes and measure their area.
  • Introducing Text Structures in Writing-5th Grd
    This activity introduces students to the idea that science writing is organized in identifiable patterns called text structures. Understanding and using these different text structures help refine students’ abilities to both read and write in science.
  • Magnetic Fields of Magnets
    The students will be able to compare the magnetic fields of various types of magnets (e.g., bar magnet, disk magnet, horseshoe magnet.) Also they will compare Earth’s magnetic field to the magnetic field of a magnet.
  • The Heat is On!
    This activity gives students experience with chemical change.
  • The Human Line Plot
    Students will learn about collecting data and using charts and line plots to graph the data.
  • Using Cause and Effect to Write in Science
    The purpose of this activity is to teach writing in a science context using the text structure of compare and contrast.
  • Using Compare and Contrast to Write in Science
    The purpose of this activity is to teach writing in a science context using the text structure of compare and contrast.
  • Using Description to Write in Science
    The purpose of this activity is to teach the text structure of descriptive writing in the science context of animal adaptations.
  • What Does Average Look Like?
    This lesson will help students understand the concepts of range, median, mode, and mean through the use of graphs drawn from models.
