  • Argumentative Writing/Religions of the World Unit
    This 14 day Unit Plan integrates the Utah Core Standards for Language Arts and for Reading and Writing in History/Social Studies with the existing Utah Social Studies Standards. The students read, research, draw conclusions, and write beginning level argumentative essays comparing/contrasting major world religions.   • Microbes On My Mind
    Students will observe and read about microorganisms so that they can create an information book on microorganisms.
  • Patterned Paragraphs
    The objective of this activity is to reinforce the importance of being specific while dealing with events of a sequential nature, such as the phases of the moon.
  • Text Structures-Informational Writing/Mesopotamia Unit
    This 18 day unit explicitly teaches text structures, summary, text features, reading informational text about Mesopotamia, and writing a book about Mesopotamia. Instruction moves from high scaffolding to moderate scaffolding to independent practice as students become familiar with the various text structures, how to identify them, what graphic organizer will work with each text structure, how to use notes recorded in graphic organizers to write summaries, and how to compile an informational book. Mesopotamia is the content used as an anchor.
  • The Black Snowman, An Interdisciplinary Unit
    This lesson will involve work in oral language, concepts of print, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing with the use of one book, The Black Snowman.

  • Exploring Compare and Contrast Structure in Expository Texts
    This lesson from ReadWriteThink focuses on the strategy of compare and contrast. Students use graphic organizers and clue words to evaluate nonfiction text, and they participate in a variety of other activities.
  • I'm Gonna Sit Right Down & Write Someone a Letter
    Use these fascinating letters as a starting point for discussion of and practice in the conventions and purposes of letter writing. After completing the lessons in this unit your students will be able to answer the following questions: What are the conventions of letter-writing? How is letter-writing used for various types of communication?
  • Recording the Changing Seasons in Ancient Times
    In this lesson, students learn about Stonehenge and read ancient myths and stories explaining the seasons. Acting as historians, the students use websites to find information about how ancient cultures kept track of and celebrated the seasons. This lesson is found on the Xpeditions website from National Geographic.
  • Reviving Bodie
    In this lesson students will research the ghost town of Bodie and imagine that the state of California has decided to make Bodie a town again and to let people settle there. The groups will write guides for the town's new potential citizens explaining the things they need to know about the town's climate, landscape, location, natural resources, and history.
  • Writing and Assessing an Autobiographical Incident
    In this lesson from ReadWriteThink, students will build upon their knowledge of biographies to write their own autobiographical incident. Students will be given a rubric and shown several examples. They will then complete the writing process and share their autobiographies with the class.
