  • Accessing Complex Text Through Structured Conversations
Students use a structured format (an adaptation of Think-Pair-Share) to discuss and deconstruct complex text.
  • Analyzing Informational Text
Students use the Informational Text Analysis Tool to deconstruct the essential elements of informational text.
  • GIST Summaries
GIST is a strategy to help students write brief, accurate, and complete summaries of material they read. Students work together summarizing larger and larger portions of text, but keeping their summaries at 25 words or fewer.
  • Incorporating Informational Text: Article of the Week
Students build their knowledge base and learn to read and summarize informational texts.
  • Using Protocols to Enhance Student Collaboration
Students use a Tuning Protocol to give and receive peer-to-peer feedback on student writing in a structured, safe environment.
  • Written Conversation / Silent Discussion
Silent Discussion takes the strengths of a well-managed verbal classroom discussion and moves into a written discussion. Some of the benefits of this move include:
    • all students participate
    • students practice writing in a low-stakes, social format
    • students engage with content skills and knowledge

  • Families in Bondage
This two-part lesson plan draws on letters written by African Americans in slavery and by free blacks to loved ones still in bondage, singling out a few among the many slave experiences to offer students a glimpse into slavery and its effects on African American family life. Through these letters, students explore some of the ways African Americans sought to overcome this anguish.
