  • 1st Grade - Act. 17: Observing Plants Through a Journal
    During the class' plant unit, students will observe a plant and write and illustrate what they have learned in their discovery journal.
  • 1st Grade - Act. 18: Seed Sort
    Students form a variety of categories for seed mixes (wild bird seed or 15 bean soup) and create graphs to display their categories.
  • 1st Grade - Act. 22: Retelling the Tiny Seed
    Using the interactive writing procedures, students will write sentences and illustrate ways seeds travel.
  • 1st Grade - Act. 23: How Tall are Plants?
    Students will measure a plant using unifix cubes and record their measurements on a class chart.
  • All Sorts of Seeds!
    Students will learn about comparing seeds and how they are carried through the environment.
  • Do Plants Need Water?
    Lima beans are planted at successively farther distances from a water source so that students can observe the impact of water on seed germination.
  • How Big is a Foot?
    This activity introduces nonstandard measurement and provides practice with estimating and measuring lengths.
  • Plant Detectives
    Exploration of the school grounds and thought images are used to demonstrate the many uses of plants.
  • Seed House
    After reading Eric Carle's story "The Tiny Seed", students will make a seed house and write observations in their discovery journal.
  • Sock Walk (Seed Dispersal)
    Students collect seeds from field plants as part of understanding seed dispersal.
  • Sprouting Scientists!
    This lesson provides students with the opportunity to observe and describe plants as they grow from seeds.
  • Time Capsule
    Students will learn to compare and contrast changes over time.
