  • 1st Grade - Act. 19: Will it Float?
    After dropping a number of items into water, students will discuss why some things float and others sink.
  • 1st Grade - Act. 20: Changing Matter
    Students will investigate the concept of water changing states.
  • 1st Grade - Act. 24: Interactive Writing
    Using the interactive writing procedure, students will write about vehicles that float.
  • A Fish in Water
    A classroom goldfish teaches responsible pet care and helps students understand how animal need clean water to live.
  • Heavy Water
    The relative weight of water, in different types of containers, is explored.
  • I am a Scientist
    Students learn about the scientific method while using the skills of predicting, experimenting, communicating, writing, and inferring.
  • The Mystery of the Sponge
    Students observe that water has weight and that weight decreases as water evaporates. The changes that occur as a sponge dries on a yardstick balance illustrates this concept.
  • The Wonderful World of Water
    These activities will help students understand the properties of water.
  • Water Magicians
    Students observe water changing states from a solid to a liquid to a gas.
  • Water and Plants...How Dry I Am
    Two similar plants are observed as one gets regular water and the other does not.
  • Water is Special
    Anticipation guides are used in this investigation of water and interactions with water.
  • Water, Water Everywhere
    Murals are used to represent the various ways we rely on water.
  • Water: Float and Sink
    Students will investigate objects that float and sink in water and describe what they discover by making representations of their findings.

  • Imaginary River Trip
    Students create an imaginary river trip through a Readers Theater and learn that plants, animals, and humans need water to survive.
  • Under the Deep Blue Sea
    In this lesson, students have the opportunity to explore oceans and ocean life. Through creative writing and research projects, students will learn about the ocean and the creatures that live there. This resource is located on the Edsitement website.
