(Comprehension): Students understand, interpret, and analyze narrative and informational grade level text.
 
  • Aesop's Fables Online
    A large collection of fables and other stories. The fables are divided into sections. One section includes 85 quick-reading fables with morals. The site also includes an online dictionary.
  • Characters in Because of Winn-Dixie: Making Lists of Ten
    Students will discuss characters and characterization in a text; work in cooperative groups; use a bookmark to document their findings while reading; identify and analyze the listing technique presented in Because of Winn-Dixie; create a list of ten things about a character.
  • Children's Authors and Illustrators
    A list of sites for children's authors and illustrators.
  • Demonstrating Comprehension Through Journal Writing
    Students will Listen to a story and respond in writing; learn and use several comprehension strategies including self-questioning, retelling, predicting, summarizing, and assuming the role of a character to respond to questions in journal format; share journal responses orally to stimulate discussion, express opinions, and deepen their understanding of the story.
  • Education Place Graphic Organizers
    This is a collection of unique graphic organizers to print. Includes a Spanish version of the organizers.
  • Folklore, Myth and Legend
    This is a collection of folktales, myths and legends. Teachers should determine the age appropriateness of the stories.
  • Graphic Organizer Samples
    A collection of printable graphic organizers.
  • Graphic Organizers
    This site has different versions of graphic organizers that can be printed off for use in writing or reading.
  • How to Study
    This site provides students and teachers with strategies and skills that will help students do better in school. It provides information on how to prepare to study, how to improve reading skills, and how to take notes.
  • Into the Book: Student Area
    Although students need to use a key to enter this site it doesn't take long to get started. After the key is entered students can choose one of the 8 reading strategies to learn about and then practice by completing the online student interactives.
  • Into the Book: Teacher Area
    Into the Book is a rich resource for teaching and learning reading comprehension in grades K-4. Organized around eight key strategies, the website offers videos and interactive activities for students while providing short PD videos, lesson plans, and other resources for teachers.
  • Jon Scieska Fractured Fairy Tales
    Before reading The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!, ask for volunteers to tell the traditional story of the three little pigs. Let the volunteers take turns telling parts of the story. Then read The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! together with your class. Ask students to fold a piece of paper in half. On one side of the paper, they should make a list of what parts of this story are different from the traditional story. On the other side of the paper, they should make a list of what parts of the story are the same.
  • MysteryNet's Kids Mysteries
    This site provides several different sections focusing on mysteries and solving mysteries. Students read stories and try to solve the mysteries. The site includes lesson ideas for teacher use in the classroom.
  • Poetry for Kids - The Funny Forty
    The collection of 40 poems by Kenn Nesbitt. The site also links to an interview with Mr. Nesbitt and additional poetry and resources. Lessons for writing funny poetry.
  • Research Cards
    This site contains different types of cards that can be printed off for students to use when gathering information. It also includes a collection of graphic organizers.
  • Word Central
    There are a variety of activities found on this site. Activities include: An online dictionary; A build-your-own dictionary where students can enter their own words; a daily buzzword; a science lab that write phrases in codes; a rhyming dictionary, etc.
  • Writing Den Topics
    Students choose a topic that interests them. They then select to read about words, sentences, or paragraphs about the topic and then take a short quiz to check comprehension.
