Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

  • Perspective on the Slave Narrative
    This lesson plan introduces students to one of the most widely-read genres of 19th-century American literature and an important influence within the African American literary tradition even today. The lesson focuses on the Narrative of William W. Brown, An American Slave (1847), which, along with the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (1845), set the pattern for this genre and its combination of varied literary traditions and devices. To help students recognize the complex nature of the slave narrative, the lesson explores Brown's work from a variety of perspectives.

    The Purdue OWL (Online Writing Lab) has grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and conventions resources as well as professional writing material and general composition information. The site includes everything from comma splices to resumes in clearly explained pages. It is the premiere source for online writing information.
  • Teaching Argument Writing, Grades 6-12
    Supporting Claims with Relevant Evidence and Clear Reasoning - This book teaches us not only what an argument is, but how to teach it and why we should.
  • Tenth Grade Range of Writing Argument Writing Samples
    These pieces provide examples of argument writing for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences, over both extended and shorter time frames.
  • University of Richmond's Writers' Web
    Writer's Web is a free, public-access handbook designed and maintained by University of Richmond students and faculty. The site enables the user to explore topics via the various stages of the writing process. The site includes information on writing in non-English subject areas.
