Course Description
** Clothing I-II maybe taught as a 1.0 credit course or divided into two .5 credit courses.

CLOTHING I - (.5 credit) This course introduces students to basic sewing and pressing equipment, textiles, introductory level project construction techniques, and techniques for constructing edge finishes. Student leadership (FCCLA) may be an integral part of this course. (Standards 1-6 will be covered on Skill Certification Test # 350.)

CLOTHING II - (.5 credit) This course introduces students to basic sewing, serger, and pressing equipment, reviews the types of fabric construction, makes an intermediate level project using correct construction techniques. Student leadership (FCCLA) may be an integral part of this course. (Standards 7-10 will be covered on Skill Certification Test # 351)

Prerequisite: Clothing I must precede Clothing II


Core Standards of the Course

Standard 20.0113-01
Students will identify basic sewing equipment.

Objective 20.0113-0101
Identify sewing machine parts and their function, safety, and maintenance. National Standard 16.4.1
  • Identify the needle stitch plate, feed dogs/system, presser foot, bobbin case, spool pin, upper thread tension, presser foot lever/lifter, thread take-up lever, foot pedal, handwheel, stitch length control, and stitch width control
  • Demonstrate how to replace a needle and how to turn the hand wheel when sewing
  • Identify sewing safety precautions and procedures
  • Clean, oil, and care for the machine according to machine manual

Objective 20.0113-0102
Identify serger parts and their function, safety and maintenance. National Standard 16.4.1
  • Identify the needle stitch plate, feed dogs/system, presser foot, spool pin, thread tensions, presser foot lever/lifter, foot pedal, handwheel, stitch length control, stitch width control, and upper/lower knives

Resolve sewing and serger malfunctions.
  • Explain how to remedy skipped stitches, lint removal, noisy sewing machine, puckered seams, snagged fabric, tension, breaking of needle, etc.
  • Complete basic problems encountered when sewing: thread jam, broken needle, dull knives, incorrect stitch formation, etc.

  • Complete pressing/ironing techniques

Standard 20.0113-03
Students will identify the characteristics and care of specific textiles.

Objective 20.0113-0301
Identify basic fibers, the characteristics, use and care of each textile. National Standards 16.2.1, 16.2.2, 16.2.5
  • Identify natural fibers: cotton, linen, silk, wool
  • Identify synthetic fibers: nylon, polyester, acrylic, rayon, spandex, acetate
  • Identify blended yarns/threads
  • Practice stain removal techniques

Discuss how fabric construction affects selection of fabric. National Standard 16.4.2
  • Identify the characteristics of woven fabrics

Students will follow the pattern envelope and guidesheet to compete the pre-construction skills at the introductory level.

  • Identify pattern tissue terminology/symbols: grainline, arrows, notches, small dots, square, triangles, buttons and buttonholes, cutting line, stitching line, fold lines
  • Complete necessary pattern adjustments: length or width

Objective 20.0113-0502
Examine and select correct thread for the project. National Standard 16.4.5
  • Standard thread is all purpose/cotton wrapped polyester
  • Specialty threads: quilting, heavy duty, embroidery, metallic, etc.
  • Serger thread is lighter weight than standard sewing machine threads
  • Quality thread prevents stitching problems

Objective 20.0113-0503
Compare and select correct needles. National Standard 16.4.5
  • Identify needle types: universal, sharp and ball point
  • Needle sizes: the bigger the number the bigger the needle
  • Lengthwise groove on the needle carries the thread
  • Insert needle according to machine manual.

Objective 20.0113-0504
Identify and construct standard seam widths and markings. National Standard 16.4.5
  • Standard seam width for commercial patterns is 5/8 inch
  • Always check guidesheet/instructions for correct seam width
  • Identify 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, and 3/4 inch width markings on the needle plate

Objective 20.0113-0505
Press garment correctly. National Standard 16.4.5
  • Identify direction seam allowance should be pressed
  • Pressing is an up and down motion; ironing is a sliding motion
  • Press as you sew
  • Use correct temperature for fabric
  • Use steam/moisture if appropriate
  • Use pressing cloth to prevent scorching and/or shine marks

  • Complete one of the following hemming techniques: hand stitched hems, double fold hem, machine blind hem, rolled hem or other hemming techniques
  • Apply correct edge finishes: clean finished, zigzag, serged, stitched and pinked
  • Identify steps of hem preparation: appropriate length and width, reduce bulk, ease, pressing
  • Identify types of hems: machine blind him, double fold hem, rolled hem, double needle, or blind hemming stitches

Use commercially prepared intermediate directions/guide sheets throughout the project construction.
