Course Description
DESIGNER SEWING/FASHION DESIGN—(.5 credit) This course is designed for students who have interests in the fields of design, apparel, textiles, and clothing construction. Individual projects using design principles will be used as vehicles to further develop the students’ skills. Experiences may include pattern design, surface design, principles of clothing construction, fitting and alteration, custom sewing, home decorating, and other entrepreneurial opportunities.

*Basic construction techniques should be integrated throughout the course in various projects.

• Define and use established sewing terms
• Prepare the fabric for cutting
• Lay out the pattern according to standard procedures
• Cut according to guidelines and mark the pieces for construction

• Apply various types of seams and seam finishes
• Select and apply various types of interfacings appropriate to the project
• Perform a variety of sleeve/armhole finishing techniques
• Apply a variety of collars/neck edge finishing techniques
• Apply cuffs and waistbands
• Apply various types of zippers
• Apply various types of fasteners, buttons and buttonholes
• Perform lining/underlining techniques as needed
• Perform a variety of hem and hem finishing techniques
• Apply various types of trims, finishing techniques, decorative stitching, and machine embroidery techniques
• Perform a variety of pocket techniques
• Perform specialized techniques necessary for constructing boutique items or home fashions

• Incorporate principles of line and design

Students will produce products to be sold in a boutique.
* All items included in this unit must be based on sewing construction skills.

• Identify various items that could be produced
• Identify specialized sewing techniques to be used in construction
• Identify guidelines for specific techniques commonly used in the construction of boutique items

• Complete sample boutique items: quilting, embroidery, applique, stuffing, stripping, trapunto, ruffles
• Evaluate sample and/or projects for construction quality and resource management

• Items selected for projects in this unit will be updated regularly to reflect current fashion trends, fads, and techniques.
