Course Description
Students will be exposed to equine science and technology principles which include genetics, anatomy, physiology/nutrition, diseases, pests, and management practice. The scientific processes of observations, measurement, hypothesizing, data gathering, interpretation, analysis, and application are stressed. Career opportunities and educational preparation are examined. Learning activities are varied, with classroom, laboratory, and field experiences emphasized.


Core Standards of the Course

Standard 1
Students will develop an understanding of the role of FFA in Agricultural Education Programs.

Objective 1
Understand the history and organization of FFA.
  • Explain how, when, and why the FFA was organized.
  • Explain the mission and strategies, colors, motto, parts of the emblem, and the organizational structure of the FFA.
  • Recite and explain the meaning of the FFA Creed.
  • Explain the purpose of a Program of Activities and its committee structure.

Objective 2
Discover opportunities in FFA.
  • Describe how the FFA develops leadership skills, personal growth, and career success.
  • Identify major state and national activities available to FFA members.

Standard 2
Students will understand the benefits of a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) Program.

Objective 1
Determine the benefits of an SAE.
  • Explain the importance of goals and career ladders.
  • Define supervised horticultural/agricultural experience.
  • Explain the benefits of supervised horticultural/agricultural experience programs.

Objective 2
Determine the kinds of SAE programs.
  • Explain the difference between entrepreneurship and placement SAE’s.
  • Describe research/experimentation and exploratory SAE’s.
  • Explain the characteristics of a good SAE program and student responsibilities that are involved.

Objective 3
Research possible SAE programs.
  • Identify career interest areas in agriculture.
  • Identify skills needed for career success.
  • Explain opportunities for SAE programs.

Objective 4
Plan an SAE program.
  • Identify the steps in planning an SAE program.
  • Identify the parts of an annual SAE program plan.
  • Discuss the function of a training plan and/or agreement in an SAE program.

Standard 3
Students will study career opportunities in equine science.

Objective 1
Present the general skills required for employment.

Objective 2
Use resources and assess information.

Objective 3
Describe the educational opportunities available.

Objective 4
List three ways to gain experience in the horse industry.

Objective 5
Identify eight careers and entrepreneurship opportunities in equine science.

Standard 4
Students will understand the history of the modern horse and the development of horse breeds, types, and classes.

Objective 1
Describe the development of modern horses.

Objective 2
Discuss the domestication of the horse.

Objective 3
Identify historical trends of human utilization of horses.

Objective 4
Describe the current horse industry.

Objective 5
Describe the gaits and movements of horses.

Objective 6
Classify and describe equine as pony, light, draft, and long-eared.

Objective 7
List and describe equine breeds and their origins.

Standard 5
Students will analyze equine anatomy and physiology.

Objective 1
Identify the external parts of the horse.

Objective 2
Explore equine bodily systems.

Objective 3
Describe the skeletal and muscular systems of the horse.

Objective 4
Describe the digestive system of the horse.

Objective 5
Describe the reproductive systems of the horse.

Standard 6
Students will learn about equine nutrition and feeding management.

Objective 1
List and discuss basic nutrients.

Objective 2
Identify feeds important to horses.

Objective 3
Balance an equine ration.

Objective 4
List and describe equine nutritional disorders.

Standard 7
Students will explore concepts in equine health management.

Objective 1
List, identify, and describe equine diseases.

Objective 2
Identify horse internal and external parasites.

Objective 3
Properly care for hooves and explain hoof anatomy.

Objective 4
Determine proper horse health management practices.

  • Teeth floating and aging.
