Course Description
Introduction
This guide had been produced to establish instructional standards for secondary Graphic Arts/Printing Programs in the state of Utah. The Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) Code 48.0201 is a program code and conforms to the “Classification of Instructional Programs” published and maintained by the U.S. Department of Education.

Printing Industries of America (PIA) has established a set of occupational skill standards for Graphics/Printing Technology. Those standards have provided the basis for this program guide. Since advisory committees statewide request we continue to teach broad skills, the guide has been developed in a format that addresses graphics/printing skills in general. Articulation with secondary programs has been a major consideration. However, that remains a local agreement between secondary schools and their supporting postsecondary school.

Concept of the Guide
The guide was produced to assist instructors. Use of the publication should provide assurance that the program is being taught to the adopted standards. The guide itself does not contain curriculum. There is an abundance of curricular materials available to instructors at very reasonable prices. Curriculum should be selected from the list provided under the “Helps for Instructors” section, or at the choice of the instructor as long as the materials used address the standards and objectives. The guide is organized into four parts: Standards and Objectives, Helps for Instructors, Workplace Skills, and an Appendix. The appendix contains ideas and helps for the instructor.

Using the Guide
Publication of this guide is not to be viewed as an effort to limit instructors. Each instructor will advance his/her program from an individual approach, and will even tailor the standards and objectives to some extent. The student is expected to demonstrate competency in each standard described. It is the responsibility of the instructor to determine competency and the level at which the student performs.

It is expected that academic and workplace skills will be integrated into program instruction.
The Workplace Skills section of the guide is based on the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) Professional Development Program, and is provided for use in those schools desiring to integrate the VICA plan into their graphics/printing program. The academic skills are listed in the guide but are not expected to be taught as a separate section.

Structure of the Program
It is important to keep in mind that this guide is a program guide. That indicates there are multiple classes or courses making up that program. The guide establishes the rough structure of the classes. However, schools will modify that structure to fit available schedule time in the particular school.

PIA expects an evaluation document addressing the skill standards to be printed sometime in the near future. It is anticipated that the State Competency Assessment for Graphics/Printing will be based on that assessment document. If PIA is ready as anticipated, that could mean there would be a state ATE competency assessment exam based on these standards. Until then, the state will issue its own exam for competency assessment.

* VICA PDP requirements - optional but recommended
