Course Description
The Travel and Tourism course provides the student with an understanding of one of the largest industries in the world. Specific applications include the evolution of the tourism industry, destination geography, airlines, international travel, cruising, travel by rail, lodging, and touring and travel agencies. Students taking marketing classes should have the opportunity to participate in the DECA Organization (student marketing leadership organization). DECA related activities and curriculum can be used as an approved part of all marketing classes.


Core Standards of the Course

Standard 08.0901-01
The student will develop an understanding of the evolution of the travel and tourism industry.

Objective 08.0901-0101
Understand the structure of the travel and tourism industry.
  • Learn the importance of infrastructure.
  • Discover the importance of customer service.
  • Develop an understanding of the importance of marketing in the travel and tourism industry.
  • Recognize the changing world of travel.

Objective 08.0901-0102
Explore places and people around the world.
  • Learn about different locations and destination geography.
  • Discover how one location relates to other destinations.
  • Understand how to find travel information.
  • Demonstrate geographical knowledge of U.S. tourism regions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Utah by sighting points of interest, major cities, national and state parks.

Standard 08.0901-02
The student will explore the different forms of transportation used in the travel and tourism industry.

Objective 08.0901-0201
Acquire knowledge about North American Aviation.
  • Understand airline codes and city codes.
  • Explore marketing channels available.
  • Understand the Airline Reporting Corporation (ARC).
  • Explore airport management.
  • Identify the air travel process.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of frequent flyer programs by researching three airlines.

Objective 08.0901-0202
Discover the excitement of international travel.
  • Identify international airlines.
  • Calculate foreign exchange.
  • Discuss international airline fares and ticketing.
  • Demonstrate the ability to locate information on international destinations and points of entry.

Objective 08.0901-0203
Understand the benefits and aspects of travel by rail and automobile.
  • Learn about domestic rail systems.
  • Discover international passenger trains and the new technology available.
  • Explore the rental car industry.

Objective 08.0901-0204
Recognize the growing cruising industry.
  • Discover life aboard ship.
  • Explore different cruising areas around the world.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the cruising industry by researching different cruise lines, ports of call, ship attractions and costs.

Standard 08.0901-03
The student will develop an understanding of the lodging industry, touring industry, meetings, conventions and travel agencies.

Objective 08.0901-0301
Recognize important aspects of the hospitality and lodging industry.
  • Describe the traveler at rest.
  • Identify hotel classifications.
  • Understand the lodging structure and sales.
  • Discuss different types of conventions and meetings.

Objective 08.0901-0302
Discover the touring industry.
  • Learn about the evolution of the touring industry.
  • Discover different tour areas throughout the world.
  • Identify touring regulations.
  • Demonstrate understanding of tours by making a two-week travel itinerary for clients.

Objective 08.0901-0303
Recognize the role of travel agencies in the tourism industry.
  • Discuss the importance of providing sales and service.
  • Demonstrate understanding of promotion by completing a brochure.
  • Discover the importance of corporate travel agencies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of travel agencies by researching three different companies and the services they offer.
