CONTENT CLASS 04: TITLES
(definitions and guidelines for individual elements listed
by logical groupings--"Content Classes")
ADMIN & EMEDIA LABELS |
METADATA DESCRIPTORS |
METADATA ATTRIBUTES |
The metadata elements clustered under TITLES identify given, supplied, and alternative titles for media items, as well as the type of title being assigned and its unique media identifier. Included under TITLES is a Contextual Title which helps identify the hierarchical context in which a media item exists; the Contextual Titles also alphabetize search results nicely as they identify the components of a title statement from the largest context down to the smallest context. |
Title (working) |
[for cataloging] |
The TITLE (WORKING) is a "working title" assigned to a video program that is in the workflow processes attached to the North Plains Telescope DAM system and its Video Manager. This is not the official or proper title of a media item as it would be searched and viewed by an end user through Telescope, but is instead a unique identifier for the program during its first phase of production and preparation for the digital asset management system (such as segmenting and captioning). |
"Title (working)" is one of the mandatory metadata fields that must be populated in a challenge window when a video program is being set up within Telescope's Video Manager. |

For UCME, the TITLE (WORKING) is an 8 character file named assigned by FileMaker Pro; a full length video program that is digitized follows this protocol: FLXXXXXX.mov. For UIMC and other collections, a different protocol has been specified by UEN. |

Title [eMedia] Title |
[for publication] |
Typically, a Title will be a name by which the resource is formally known. The descriptor TITLE is a name given to the media item you are cataloging. It is the unique name everyone should use to refer to or search for a particular media item. The name given to the resource by the creator or publisher; may also be an identifying phrase or name of the object supplied by the contributing institution. |

Transcribe the title, if there is one, from the resource itself, such as a caption from a photograph or a title on a map. When no title is found on the resource itself, use a title assigned by the contributing institution or found in reference sources. For more guidance in constructing titles, consult established cataloging rules such as Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2) or Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DAC) or Cataloging Cultural Objects (CCO). Make the title as descriptive as possible, avoiding simple generic titles such as Papers or Annual report. When possible, exclude initial articles from title. Exceptions might include when the article is an essential part of the title or when local practice requires use of initial articles. Libarians prefer that you capitalize only the first letter of the first word of the title or of any proper names contained within the title. The rest of us are accustomed to using Title Case rules when entering a title, which is what UMAP will do. In general, transcribe titles and subtitles from the source using the same punctuation that appears on the source. If the holding institution has created the title, then use punctuation that would be appropriate for English language. There are obviously many types of titles a media item may have, such as a series title, episode title, segment title, or project title. Use the descriptor TITLE TYPE to indicate the type of title you are assigning to the media item being cataloged (item-level record). A companion metadata field that is also published to end users by UMAP is called TITLE (CONTEXTUAL). This is a statement that presents a string of contextually related titles (such as an episode that is part of a series, a segment that is part of a program, an excerpt that is part of a book, etc.). |

Many of the current eMedia "Titles" already contain contextual title information. Because contextual titles now belong to its own metadata field, umap_title_contextual (functional rule), the existing titles within eMedia will need to be edited! |

Title (contextual) [eMedia] Title (contextual) |
[for publication][Functional Rule] |
In a very strict metadata world, the title for a media item should only refer to the intellectual content of that media item, and not its contextual relationship to a companion or related asset (such as an episode from a series, or an article from a book compilation). From an end user's viewpoint, if a title can convey its contextual relationship, then related media items may be easier to find during a search. At a glance, the user is able to see the relationships exhibited by a media item. Search results may also organize themselves in more meaningful sequences and orders when alphabetically listed on a "results" web page. Consequently, the UEN Digital Media Service will, when appropriate, gather the titles of contextually related media items and assemble them into a summary statement called TITLE (CONTEXTUAL). |
The contextual titles that are entered are also important for constructing a drm_source_citation/CITATION used as an attribution for a media item that may be repurposed by end users. The goal is to generate the CITATION automatically via a Telescope "Functional Rule" rather than by manual hand-crafting (with all of its pesky punctuation rules). NOTE: feeds the source_citation functional rule |

umap_title_contextual is created by using a Functional Rule. The summary statement is intended to be hierarchical, starting with the largest unit and ending with the smallest, discrete unit on which the media item is based. The title for each contextual component is followed by an identifier of its place in the title hierarchy; this identifier is entered manually in the sub-fields which feed the umap_title_contextual. This hierarchical context is enclosed in a set of BRACKETS that is separated from its title by a SPACE. The trailing bracket is immediately followed by a PERIOD. If other titles are included in the hierarchy, the period is followed by a single SPACE. For example, Utah: The Struggle for Statehood [series]. Part 1 [episode]. 01-Exodus [segment]. The fields which are gathered into TITLE (CONTEXTUAL) are not always, by definition, readily apparant as mutually exclusive terms. The idea is to use whichever contextual titles that make sense for the media item being catalogued. By using the "best fitting" contextual titles, the summary title will have greater meaning and accuracy. The contextual titles that are included in the TITLE (CONTEXTUAL) string may include: -[collection] -[project] -[package] -[series] -[program] -[episode] -[segment] -[periodical] -[book] -[issue] -[chapter] -[article] -[selection] -[excerpt] -[URL] -[transcript file] -[caption file] |

If a media item is larger than a "project" or "package", then include the title of that "collection" and immediately follow the title with [collection]. The punctuation is Title + space+[collection]+period. |
A collection is larger in scope than a project, package, or series, because a collection could include multiple titles from all of those elements or components. A collection may also be on-going and repeating over the course of time. Unlike the data found in the UMAP metadata field umap_collection_name (which is used for cataloging and project management purposes only), umap_title_context_collection contains valuable information about the contextual origins of a media item. It is therefore used to feed the umap_title_contextual functional rule. Concerning UCME entries, calculations (if-then statements) will be written in the crosswalk in order to assign titles into the proper contextual title slots (see the UMCE MAPPINGS below).
