The metadata elements clustered under SUBJECTS define the broad topical areas for the intellectual content present in a media item. Typically, a subject area is expressed by a limited number of keywords, key phrases, or even specific classification codes. Controlled vocabularies, authorities, or formal classification schemes are employed when selecting descriptive subject terms rather than using random words. However, UMAP draws a distinction between its use of the content class "Subjects" and the more conventional use of "Subjects" in other metadata schemas. In other schemas "Subjects" is often synonymous with "Keywords." But because of its close affiliation to Utah's K-12 public education, UMAP (through eMedia) defines subject areas according to Utah's state core curriculum definition of subjects, classes, and objectives. Nevertheless, other curriculum definitions of subjects, as well as higher education's preference for correlations with "academic disciplines," are accommodated in UMAP. More granular "subject/keyword descriptions" related to the intellectual content of media items are handled by the metadata fields clustered under the content class KEYWORDS. |

SUBJECTS DEFINED BY identifies a specific authority, standard, or classification scheme whose vocabularies, topics and terms are used to describe the subject area(s) for a media item. |

A single authority from which keywords, topics and terms are selected would not suffice for all collections, media items, and their respective audiences. Dozens of authorities, schemes, and vocabularies have been developed. Some are useful for assigning general keywords. Others are highly specific to certain disciplines, fields of study, and industries. A website entitled World Wide Web Consortium Thesauri and Controlled Vocabularies Available for the Choice of Controlled Subject Terms lists dozens of subject authorities in use around the world: World Wide Web Subject Terms The eMedia collections for Utah's K-12 educators and students use the Utah Core Curriculum subjects and standards, as arranged in their hierarchies. Other collections may draw subject terms from the more general topic areas supplied by GEM: Gateway to Educational Materials or from other nationally recognized standards such as McREL and AIMS. Higher education materials may prefer to identify subjects by referring to specific academic disciplines. |
