The metadata elements clustered under TITLES identify given, supplied, and alternative titles for media items, as well as the type of title being assigned and its unique media identifier. Included under TITLES is a Contextual Title which helps identify the hierarchical context in which a media item exists; the Contextual Titles also alphabetize search results nicely as they identify the components of a title statement from the largest context down to the smallest context. |

The descriptor THIS TITLE IS A(N) is a companion metadata field associated with the descriptor TITLE. For the title given to a media item, you may wish to inform end users what "type of title" it is. These descriptions offer users a glimpse into what sort of media item they can expect to see or hear when the file is previewed or downloaded and displayed (regardless of its media type... video, audio, image, text document or interactive object). |
|
The TITLE TYPES are not used to identify media types; those descriptors are available through other metadata fields called MEDIA TYPE (umap_media_type_informal) and MEDIA TYPE-FORMAL (umap_media_type_formal). (see the picklist of recommended vocabulary terms). The TITLE TYPES are harvested from related descriptors used in a library's MARC record, specifically the MARC 245 element for General Media Descriptions (GMD) and the MARC 300 element for Specific Media Descriptions (SMD). TITLE TYPES are a mix of descriptors that may be related to the original source for a media item, sometimes a physical item, an analog item, or even an item that was "born digital" in the first place. |
