V DESCRIPTION...
* DEFINITION...

In a very strict metadata world, the title for a media item should only refer to the intellectual content of that media item, and not its contextual or hierarchical relationship to a companion or related asset (such as an episode from a series, or an article from a book). From an end user's viewpoint, if a title can convey its contextual relationship, more meaning is attached to that title and related media items may be easier to find during a search. Search results may also organize themselves into more meaningful sequences and orders when alphabetically listed on a "results" web page (for example: sorted by series, program title, segment title).

Consequently, the UEN Digital Media Service will, when appropriate, identify the titles of hiearchically related media items and enter them into appropriate UMAP metadata fields. An automatic Trigger will assemble the hierarchical titles into a summary statement called TITLE (CONTEXTUAL).

* COMMENTS...

The contextual titles that are entered into UMAP are also important for constructing a drm_source_citation/CITATION used as an attribution for a media item that may be repurposed by end users. The goal is to generate the CITATION automatically via a Telescope "Trigger" rather than by manual hand-crafting (with all of its pesky punctuation rules).

NOTE: feeds the source_citation trigger.

V DATA ENTRY...

* GUIDELINES...

umap_title_contextual is created by using a Telescope Trigger.
The summary statement that is automatically generated is intended to be hierarchical, starting with the most general level or unit, regressing to the least general level or unit on which the media item is based, and finally ending with the actual title for the media item (considered to be the most specific). There are four contextual title fields; they are only populated down to, but not including, the actual title for the media item. The actual title (umap_title) is considered the most specific and is entered into its own distinct metadata field. In the final Contextual Title that is generated by the trigger, the umap_title is appended to the end of the TITLE (CONTEXTUAL) summary statement.

THE FOUR HIERARCHICAL LEVELS:

Level 1 = the Most General Title in the contextual statement.
...for example, a collection might be entered here, such as "Utah Postcard Collection." Or a series title, such as "The Geography of Utah"
Level 1= The Geography of Utah (as a series)
Level 2= nothing
Level 3= nothing
Level 4= nothing
Actual Title = Episode 16-The Great Salt Lake (as an episode)
FINAL CONTEXTUAL TITLE = The Geography of Utah. Episode 16-The Great Salt Lake.

Level 2 = a Less General Title in the contextual statement.
...for example, if a series title is Level 1 and the media item's actual title refers to a segment from an episode, then Level 2 would be "Episode 16-The Great Salt Lake." The actual title of the media item, "Segment 03-Fremont Island," is appended to the end of the contextual title statement. Note that if the media item being catalogued is actually an episode and its actual title is "Episode 16-The Great Salt Lake," then the only contextual title entry is at Level 1, as the series "The Geography of Utah" (refer to the Level 1 example above).
Level 1= The Geography of Utah (as a series)
Level 2= Episode 16-The Great Salt Lake (as an episode)
Level 3= nothing
Level 4= nothing
Actual Title= Segment 03-Fremont Island (as a segment)
FINAL CONTEXTUAL TITLE = The Geography of Utah. Episode 16-The Great Salt Lake. Segment 03-Fremont Island.

Level 3 = a Fairly General Title in the contextual statement.
...for example, if the actual title of the media item is the name attached to a photograph excerpted from a video program, then...
Level 1= The Geography of Utah (as a series)
Level 2= Episode 16-The Great Salt Lake (as a program)
Level 3= Segment 03-Fremont Island (as a segment)
Level 4= nothing
Actual title = Kit Carson's Cross Engraving (as a photograph)
FINAL CONTEXTUAL TITLE = The Geography of Utah. Episode 16-The Great Salt Lake. Segment 03-Fremont Island. Kit Carson's Cross Engraving.

Level 4 = the Least General Title in the contextual statement.
...it is not anticipated that a fourth level will actually be reached in the contextual title sequence before the actual title for a medium item is reported. But just in case, and for future expansion needs, a Level 4 has been provided.

STRUCTURE OF DATA ENTRY:

Some of the contextual titles must follow specific data entry rules as far as structure, order, and punctuation.

...for an Episode from a series:
If an episode has been given a number in the series, then enter:
Episode ##-Title of the Episode
The word "Episode" is followed by a space, then a two digit number if numbers were used in the series. Be sure that single digit episodes use a leading zero (Episode 03) so that contextual titles alphabetize correctly in an ordered list of titles within the Digital Asset Management System. The two digit number (or some other alpha or alpha-numeric episode designation) is immediately followed by a "hyphen" (no spaces). The "hyphen" is immediately followed by the actual title of the episode. No trailing period should be included since it is added by the Telescope Trigger.

...for a Segment from a program or episode:
If a Segment has been drawn from a program or episode, and there are multiple segments that have been harvested, then enter:
Segment ##-Title of the Segment (if there is one)
The word "Segment" is followed by a space, then a two digit number. Be sure that single digit segments use a leading zero (Segment 03) so that contextual titles alphabetize correctly in an ordered list of titles within the Digital Asset Management System. The two digit number (or some other alpha or alpha-numeric segment designation) is immediately followed by a "hyphen" (no spaces). The "hyphen" is immediately followed by the actual title of the segment. No trailing period should be included since it is added by the Telescope Trigger.

...for a Chapter from a book:
If a chapter has been drawn from a book or manuscript, and there are multiple chapters that have been harvested, then enter:
Chapter ##-Title of the Chapter (if there is one)
The word "Chapter" is followed by a space, then a two digit number. Be sure that single digit chapters use a leading zero (Chapter 03) so that contextual titles alphabetize correctly in an ordered list of titles within the Digital Asset Management System. The two digit number (or some other alpha or alpha-numeric chapter designation) is immediately followed by a "hyphen" (no spaces). The "hyphen" is immediately followed by the actual title of the chapter. No trailing period should be included since it is added by the Telescope Trigger.

...for a Volume and Issue from a periodical:
If a volume and issue have been drawn from a periodical, then enter:
Volume ##, Issue ## (or other designation)
Different periodicals designate their volume numbers and issue numbers in various ways. Use whatever is supplied. For example:
Volume 24, Spring
Volume 1-23, February 31, 2006
Volume 23, No. 21
June 2006
Volume 15, No. 4, Spring 2006
Volume 23, No. 15, June 2006

No trailing period should be included since it is added by the Telescope Trigger.

...for other structures encountered:
Musical scores, manuscripts, and other media use a variety of methods to structure their designations. Too numerous to mention here, so refer to an established style guide, such as the Chicago Manual of Style:
http://www.libs.uga.edu/ref/chicago.html

...no trailing period:
In all cases, the terms entered should not be followed by a trailing period. The Telescope Trigger combines the various contextual titles and supplies these separating periods.

* FUNCTIONAL RULE...

The Telescope Trigger combines the various contributing sub-fields into a single statement. The trigger needs to detect for the presence of data in the four sub-fields, combine them, and insert a PERIOD+SPACE between each individual value.

The final value in the contextual title will always be the actual title of the media item, as supplied in the field umap_title. A PERIOD (but no trailing space) must be added by the trigger to the end of the umap_title in order to complete the contextual title statement. For example, Utah: The Struggle for Statehood. Part 1. Segment 01-Exodus. Route of the Dominguez-Escalante Expedition. (FYI: this example shows a Series. Episode. Segment. Actual Title.)

The sub-fields that the functional rule tests for data and combines into a single statement with appropriate trailing "period+space" or final trailing "period" after the actual media item's title are:
umap_title_context_level1 [admin override name = Title context level 1]
umap_title_context_level2 [admin override name = Title context level 2]
umap_title_context_level3 [admin override name = Title context level 3]
umap_title_context_level4 [admin override name = Title context level 4]
umap_title

The final string looks like this:
umap_title_context_level1 +period+space+ umap_title_context_level2 +period+space+ umap_title_context_level3 +period+space+ umap_title_context_level4 +period+space+ umap_title +period

Of course, if a contextual title field has no data, it is excluded from the final string, as well as its trailing punctuation of period+space.

NOTE: umap_title_contextual also feeds the source_citation trigger.
