V DESCRIPTION...
* DEFINITION...
[could be referred to as "Digital Renditions"] Digital media files that are delivered over the Internet have been categorized according to standardized MIME types, or Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions. These are also referred to as "Content Types" because their digital format contains a specific type of content that can be identified and interpreted by e-mail programs and web browsers. There are a handful of standardized Content Types: applications, audio, images, messages, models, multipart, text, and video. For each, a unique alphnumeric designation has been agreed upon by standards and registration bodies.
* COMMENTS...
North Plains will, by default, assign and display the correct MIME type for a file or rendition and display that information under the label "TYPE." For some end users, the designation may seem cryptic. Nevertheless, eMedia prefers to supply this information (in INFO views) so end users know they are evaluating a jpeg, a tiff, a pdf, a QT moov file, etc.
[NOTE: We may write a conversion that translates the cryptic MIME type designation into a more user-friendly identifier, e.g., mov instead of moov.]
