Summary

Using a Prezi presentation (prezi.com) of 20 two-syllable words, students will work together to list some facts relating to each word (topic). Then at the end of the lesson, each student will use one of the two-syllable words to write a few sentences about how that word relates to their lives.

Materials

-Prezi Presentation of two-syllable words -Equipment to display presentation -Paper -Writing Utensils

Background for Teachers

Two Syllable Words:
Students can determine how many syllables are in a word by placing their hand below their chin and saying the word. The number of times the chin goes down, that is the number of syllables in the word.

Student Prior Knowledge

-Students would need to know what a syllable is.
-They should be familiar with one syllable words.
-Students should be able to write short sentences with little assistance.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to (SWBA): understand what a two-syllable word is.
-SWBA: supply some facts about any given two-syllable word.
-SWBA: generate a written 2-3 sentence description of one two-syllable word.

Instructional Procedures

1. Introduce the topic: Today we are going to talk about two-syllable words.
a.Ask: What is a two-syllable word?
b. Let's all say the word happy. Now say happy with your hand below your chin. Your chin moved your hand twice. That tells us happy is a two syllable word.
c. Compare a two-syllable word to a one-syllable word: Say the word sun with your hand under your chin. Your chin moved your hand once that means it is a one-syllable word.

2. Model giving facts about a two-syllable word: happy.
a. When do we feel happy?
b. Why do we feel happy?
c. List on board: We feel happy when we do things we like. We are happy when we play with friends. I get happy listening to happy music. Etc….
d. I want everyone to think or list two facts about the word happy.

3. Put students into groups of 3 or 4. Have them give facts about each two-syllable word.
a. Have students talk about the next word in prezi.
a. Is dinner a two-syllable word?
b. Have students generate facts about the word dinner (either orally or written).
c. Continue with all word in the prezi. Every now and then have a group share their ideas.

4. Have students return to individual seats. Have them pick one of their favorite words from the prezi.
a. Instruct students to write 2-3 sentences describing facts about that word. Have them turn in papers.

Assessment Plan

I will assess students in three ways:
-one, I will walk around during group work and listen to students ideas;
-two, I will assess students understanding as groups share ideas orally to the class;
-and three, I will grade each students 2-3 sentence papers to assess whether or not students have reached the objectives (see rubric)
