Ask most storytellers and sixth grade English teachers, and they'll tell you that a good story gives you someone to root for and someone or something to root against—a protagonist and an antagonist locked in conflict. And from the time a bit of flint or fire was all that stood between humans and the hungry night, some of our fiercest antagonists have been beasts with giant claws and insatiable appetites for…us. Of course, most of our tales about furred, scaled or feathered terrors stalking us are outlandish fictions: most animals, even fierce ones, want nothing to do with us. So rather than deliver to you only films that feature beast antagonists, this Smackdown pits creature-villains against baddies of the two-legged kind. That's right: we're pulling out another trope familiar to literature and film: the beast within.
