Native Report

Native Report is an entertaining, informative magazine style series that celebrates Native American culture and heritage, listens to tribal elders, and talks to some of the most powerful and influential leaders of Indian Country today. The series is attractive to both a general and tribal audience, promoting understanding between cultures, tribes and reservations...offering a venue for the stories of challenge and success coming from Minnesota's tribal communities... and educating public television viewers about the culture and traditions of native citizens. Native Report is hosted by Stacey Thunder, an enrolled member of the Red Lake Nation, and co-hosted by Tadd Johnson who is an enrolled member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa. The Native Report season consists of fifteen episodes. Another fifteen episodes are planned next year which will include stories from Minnesota and Wisconsin native communities.

On this edition of Native Report visit Woodland Community Public Radio WOJB-FM in Hayward, Wisconsin which is licensed to the Lac Courte Oreilles band of Ojibwe. Then we'll bring you to the premiere of "Average Family" - the first play by an American Indian playwright at one of the world's largest children's theatres. And we'll attend a growing American Indian Arts and Music festival in northern Minnesota which brings regional attention to Native American culture by featuring artists and musicians of both local and national renown. Longtime Alaska Native tribal leader Ed Thomas talks about issues that are of most concern to his people. And we'll visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center to see how Alaska Natives have come together to celebrate and share their languages, cultures and traditions. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community has entered a new age of energy independence, with their partnership in Koda Energy, which broke ground for a clean energy plant that will be fueled by agricultural materials. The plant has the potential to provide enough energy for all of the community's needs, with power left over to sell. Business Council Chairman, Stanley Crooks, talks about the past, present, and his hopes for the future of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Community. And as stewards of the land the community prepares for that future with innovative land management practices. We'll also hear from the elders and learn something new this week on Native Report.

On this edition of Native Report we visit three places that are considered sacred by American Indian people. The Devil's Tower or Bear’s Lodge is a National Monument which is managed for the first time by an American Indian park superintendent. In the heart of the black hills, Mt Rushmore National Memorial also has its first American Indian superintendent. And at the Pipestone National Monument, they are working to preserve and protect this holy place, while still making it accessible to those who quarry here. The Prairie Island Sioux Community shows how they're using "Phraselator" military technology to preserve and pass on the unique cultural dialect of their language.
