The Number Crew - English 1 -2

Each program features an episode from a 3D animated soap opera, which is set on board the venerable luxury cruise ship the SS Mathematical. The human crew, Fiz, Flo, Bradley, Baby Bunting and their parents Ted and Mirabelle, look after the needs and whims of twenty charming but demanding animal passengers. In each episode, the Number Crew encounters a problem, which can only be solved by the application of mathematical knowledge and skills. The viewers are encouraged to join with The Number Crew in identifying the mathematical concept at the heart of the problem and developing the mental strategies and skills required to solve it, and sail on into untroubled waters.

Time for Treats
The passengers are allowed a number of sweets corresponding to their size. The Number Crew decides to give out some sweets. The number of sweets each animal gets depends on its size. Flo and Fiz hand out tickets with numbers on to each animal, and Bradley gives out the right number of sweets. Sadly the Tiger's 'six' gets ripped so it looks like a zero and Bradley can't give him any sweets. The Monkey comforts him and they discover that when they put their digits together they have a two digit number - 20 - and can claim lots more sweets. Math: Know what a 2-digit number represents

Length: 8 minutes, 48 seconds.

When Bradley takes him some orange juice he finds some of the numbers have fallen off the cabin doors. He works out how to tell which cabin is which by counting in ones and delivers the drink. Back in the galley the Crocodile calls to complain about the Polar Bear who has started dancing in the cabin above him. Math: Say a number is 1 or 10 more than a given number.

Baby Bunting tries to help in the Galley with Flo but breaks all the dishes. Flo starts to get complaints about noisy neighbors from cabins two, four and six. Math: Count on and back in 2s. Lifeboat Practice
The Number Crew has to work out how many passengers should go in each lifeboat. The crew has a practice lifeboat drill but all the passengers get in a terrible muddle. Each lifeboat holds five passengers so if Bradley sends four, how many should Fiz send? She's not sure and the boat is overfull again. They realize they'll have to learn their number pairs which add to five off by heart. Math: Understanding addition, using number bonds to five.

The Number Crew has to work out how many passengers are left in each lifeboat as some get out. The passengers are having a great time playing in the lifeboats and eating the supplies so they refuse to get out after practice. Bradley tries to order them out, but that doesn't help. Fiz asks nicely and the Panda gets out, because she's very polite. But how many does that leave in the boat? Math: Understanding subtraction using number bonds to five.

Ten Thing Bowling Competition 1
The Number Crew has to work out the scores when the passengers play Ten Thing Bowling. The Elephant is playing ten pin bowling, but he is enjoying it so much he won't let anyone else have a go. There are lots of balls in the stores, but not enough pins so the Number Crew have to sort through the ship for all sorts of bowling things instead. They make a strange collection of objects and sort them into sets of ten. Math: Understand the relationship between addition and subtraction, using number bonds to ten.

Ten Thing Bowling Competition 2
The Number Crew sets up a bowling competition and the children have to keep track of the scores to find out who's won. Mirabelle and Ted agree to a proper Ten Thing Bowling Competition and the children act as commentators. Fiz commentates as the Tiger, Moose and the Polar Bear all score ten in different ways. Math: Use knowledge of number facts and place value to add a pair of numbers mentally within the range 0 to at least 10, and 0 to at least 20

Clear Up!
The Number Crew has to clear up by filling up boxes. Mirabelle tells the kids they have to tidy up. The passengers help in their own way. Ted leaves them some boxes, which contain 5 things. Bradley reminds them they have to count how many they have all together but looking at the boxes he can see six and seven make thirteen straight away because five and five make ten then all you have to do is add the ones on top. Math: Partition and recombination - breaking numbers into five and a bit.

The Trouble with Crocodiles
The Number Crew has to sort things out by using bigger boxes. Ted and Mirabelle wonder what the kids are doing. The older ones are clearing up and Baby Bunting is playing with the Crocodile. Just when the kids have got everything sorted the Crocodile chases Baby Bunting into the boxes and chews them all up. Looks like the Number Crew will have to do all that sorting again, but there are no more fives boxes so they start using tens boxes. Math: Begin to add a pair of single digit numbers, crossing ten.

The first game is rather unfair as the Tiger and Monkey are on one team and everyone else is on the other. The passengers pick teams properly and start playing again but Bradley says they must do some practice in pairs. Math: Understand the operation of division and the associated vocabulary.
