TV 411

TV411 makes literacy relevant. Learners practice subject-verb agreement and proper punctuation so that their cover letters make the right impression. Similarly, knowing how to convert a percent into a decimal becomes a tool for understanding interest rates, calculating sale prices, and tracking spending. With the encouragement and advice offered by the adult learners, athletes, artists, and authors featured in the show, TV411 is also inspirational. TV411 gives adults strategies for managing their family's health and finances and for moving ahead at work so that they can be their own best advocates. Strategies include creating a medical journal, keeping a household budget, and collecting information for resumes and job applications. With TV411, everyday situations become educational opportunities. Learners read the newspaper and figure out new words by using context clues and the dictionary. They practice ratios and proportion when adapting recipes. Perhaps most important, TV411 builds confidence and motivation so that the learning doesn't stop when the TV's off and the books are closed."The thing I like best about TV411 is the people that are in the series. They give me courage and confidence to learn to read." - Mark Smith, adult learner
