DISTINGUISHED TEACHER EDUCATOR

Item 6: The award for the DISTINGUISHED TEACHER EDUCATOR recognizes and honors persons in higher education or in the state departments of education who have advanced the profession of teacher education. Eligible persons must fulfill at least one of the following roles:

  • Educators whose primary roles include teaching/supervising pre-service, in-service teachers, and/or graduate students;
  • Educators whose roles include program development, research, and/or administration in teacher education.

    Teacher Educator Award Standards: Nominees for this award must meet the following standards:
  1. Model professional teaching practices which demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes reflecting best practice;
  2. Inquire into and contributes to one or more areas of scholarly activity related to teaching, learning, and/or teacher education;
  3. Inquire systematically into and reflect on their own practice, and demonstrate commitment to lifelong professional development;
  4. Provide leadership in developing, implementing, and evaluating programs for educating teachers that embrace diversity and are rigorous, relevant, and grounded in best practice;
  5. Collaborate regularly with schools, universities, state education departments, professional associations, and community representatives to improve teaching, learning, and teacher education;
  6. Serve as an informed, constructively critical advocate for high quality education for all students, promote public understanding of educational issues, and show excellence and diversity in teaching and in teacher-education professions; and
  7. Contribute to improving the teacher-education profession.

  1. Describe the nominee’s role in teacher education and the setting in which he/she works.

  2. Describe how the nominee demonstrates outstanding practice in teacher education.

  3. Describe how the nominee demonstrates outstanding practice in teaching.

  4. Describe how the nominee excels in professional contributions.

Item 7: The award for the DISTINGUISHED mentor in TEACHER EDUCATION recognizes and honors those school-based educators whose work in K-12 environment helps teachers become better at what they do. UATE acknowledges the school as the principal environment for advancing effective teaching as teachers acquire new skills and practice them in the clinical setting of the classroom. This award denotes UATE’s commitment to educators in three categories:

Division I: Educators whose dual rules include classroom teaching and supervising pre-service teachers;
Division II: Educators whose dual roles include classroom teaching and mentoring other teachers;
Division III: School district employees whose primary role is staff development / in-service teacher education.

Mentor Award Criteria: Nominees for this award must meet the following criteria:
  1. Primary work responsibilities are in K-12 schools
  2. Function in dual roles of classroom teacher supervisor of pre-service teachers (Div. I) or
    Function in dual roles of classroom teacher and mentor of other teachers (Div. II)
    or
    Be a school district employee whose primary role is staff development/in-service teacher education (Div. III)
  3. Demonstrate roles as a mentor:
    Assist teachers to apply the content of the pedagogy of effective teaching, establish systems for development of teaching skills,emphasize reflective teaching and self analysis, employ exemplary coaching/conferencing techniques, and demonstrate other outstanding supervisory traits.
Mentor Information: Please answer the following four questions. Provide a complete and concise description of the nominee’s qualifications using the criteria above:
  1. Describe the nominee’s role in teacher education and the setting in which he/she works.

Item 8: The award for the distinguished Project in Teacher Education recognizes and honors outstanding teacher education projects that exemplify collaboration between individuals, local school districts, consortiums, and higher education institutions in program development and administration. The Association stands committed to recognizing this critical connection. This award is designed to stimulate development and innovation which will bring into harmony all those agencies which have direct involvement in the preparation of teachers.

Project Information and Award Criteria:
Please answer the following five questions. Please limit your comments to the award criteria outlined below.

  1. Provide a brief description of the project and its goals (a single short paragraph of 100 words).

  2. Explain the principles, theory, and/or research upon which this project is based.

  3. Briefly describe how the project was developed.

  4. Briefly describe how the project was evaluated. Describe the data collected. (Attach appendices to summarize data -- all appendices should be limited to a total of three pages.)

  5. Explain how the project improved knowledge and practice in professional development by all participants.
