UEN Projects and Initiatives For FY2015
This initiatives list represents projects that will be addressed during fiscal year 2015 (Q1: July - Sept, Q2: Oct - Dec, Q3: Jan - March, Q4: April - June). This does not include ongoing operations or maintenance items.

1 Continue to design and implement the move of 500 Tellabs circuits (move from Optera to Tellabs) K.Quire The conversion of Geomax circuits from the Optera optical transport to the new Tellabs (now Coriant) optical transport was completed on December 31st, 2014. Circuit moves are 100% complete.

Followup activities will include shutting down and physically removing the old Optera hardware from all UEN PoPs and District Offices around the state. UEN’s Erate and Accounting teams are working with CenturyLink on setting up the new billing structure.

11 Complete IVC Refresh engineering, design, project planning, and implementation based on UEN 2014/15 replacement funding (TBD) J.Egly 25% January 2015 update:
Project is planned and RFP process is underway. RUS grant of $500,000 has been secured. UEN should make an award in February and will move to implement from March to June, 2015.

IVC room site surveys in are in process and will be completed by the end 1/31/15. Next generation IVC infrastructure/MCU testing and assessment is nearing completion. Assessment includes hardware, VM and cloud based solutions.

12 Complete Lake Powell School network upgrades. J.Egly We have included this circuit in the current RFP and believe that we will be able to upgrade the bandwidth to 100 mbps.
13 Support Four Corners Network Development Project.
J.Egly Ongoing Jan. 2015 Update:
UEN continues to be engaged in providing better service to the residence in the four corners area. Commercial providers seem to be increasing service offerings and needs have been met for those with most pressing needs. UEN is also engaged in updating the Microwave radios that service this area of the state and this should allow UEN to provide for our stakeholders for the next few years.

USU-Eastern installed an unlicensed microwave path to the Ute Mountain Ute tribe’s community center in White Mesa, Utah. UEN, USU-Eastern and the San Juan School District are working on a long-term network design to support the K12 and higher education needs a this location, and UEN is exploring long-term network solutions that included a UEN funded licensed microwave path or a service provider solution funded through E-rate.

Ongoing UEN is conduction a 2015 pilot deploying solutions from Pexip, Zoom, Acano and other technical solutions. We will provide a thorough report once these pilots are concluded with recommendations for moving forward.

2 Move to Downtown Data Center (DDC) B.Peterson 92%
Equipment installed. Services are being migrated. Some production NOC Tools are live from DDC. Utah Data Alliance (UDA) network egress has been moved to DDC. The UDA environment has completely moved to the DDC. There is still network upgrades that are been made at Eccles Broadcast Center to accommodate fiber path technology between DDC and EBC.
3 Virtualize Web and Database server environments. B.Peterson 50% 80% of the web servers have moved to the VM environment. 40% of application servers are running as VM Servers. UEN still needs to migrate and many CGI application these need a complete rewrite to be moved. 70% of the database servers have been virtualized. Much of the remaining will move as the databases are migrated from Sybase to PostGreSQL.
4 Retool Web Hosting Toward Automation B.Peterson Ongoing August 2013 roll out of the new UEN web site allowed for improvements to the deployment processes. Still making progress and are looking to make it even more streamlined for Software and Content Developers to deploy to the production environments.
5 Deploy DNS IPv6 anycast addresses for native IPv6 name resolution throughout the network. B.Peterson 25% Downtown Data Center, the first of four nodes, is complete. Finish Eccles Broadcast Center, Utah Valley University, and Salt Lake Community College by the end of December 2014.
