Describe the tundra in 10 words or less ..........

Spring in June and winter in September. (That's 7 words).

There are two types of tundra in the world - arctic tundra and alpine tundra. We have alpine tundra in Utah. The following is a list of internet resources about the tundra ecosystem.

What's It Like Where You Live: Tundra

Tundra covers one-fifth of the earth's surface. How does this compare to the surface area that deserts cover?

Alaska's Cold Desert

The willow ptarmigan has water-repellent outer feathers in addition to inner feathers. These birds, which live year-round in the arctic, even grow feathers on the soles of their feet! These feathers keep feet warm and double as snowshoes to prevent the bird from sinking into the snow. What adaptations have penguins made for cold weather?

The only tree that grows in the tundra is the dwarf willow tree. It grows to a maximum of four inches tall. Why are there no tall plants on the tundra?

The permafrost in the tundra makes it difficult to construct buildings and other structures.

In the tundra "there is an interesting contrast between the incredible hardiness of the animals and plants that live here and their vulnerability to outside stressors for which they are not prepared." Check out this site's tundra food web and energy pyramid.

How is the water cycle on the arctic tundra different than the water cycle just about everywhere else in the world?

A biome project designed by 9th grade students. What does the periodic freezing and thawing of the ground do to the soil of the tundra?
