Use this website to help gather background information for your group's compare/contrast project on the three branches of U.S. government. First, read the sections of this article from the Introduction to the section on Growth of the Federal Government. Then, answer the questions about what you have read.

A brief overview of the three branches of the U.S. government.

  1. List the two types of powers each branch of government has.
  2. What is the difference in each kind of power?
  3. What does "checks and balances" mean? What is the purpose of these "checks and balances"?
  4. Explain how Congress is organized. How many members are in each house? Are the powers of each house equal? Why or why not?
  5. Summarize in 5-10 sentences the section on the presidency.
  6. What does "judicial review" mean? Why is it important?
  7. Look at the picture of the U.S. Supreme Court Building.
