Conjugating Verbs in the Present Tense
Learning to conjugate verbs involves memorization and drills. Online sites provide students with a variety of verb drills.
Spanish Grammar: Regular Verbs Part One
This is a free on-line tutorial which teachers can use to review present tense verbs in the indicative mood. Teachers have the option of registering and having quiz results e-mailed to them.
- Please read the information on this site. Take notes as necessary; or print the page in order to answer the subsequent questions in class tomorrow.
- Using the verbs in the classroom text give a verb for each of the three verb categories.
- Name the Spanish infinitives for each of the following: to speak, to live, to eat.
- Give your own definition for "infinitive."
- How would you define "conjugation?"
- Describe the pattern for verbs in the following forms: yo usted nosotros ustedes
- Using the verbs correr (to run); escribir (to write); cantar (to sing). Know the three possible meanings in the the yo form.
- Select any three regular -ar -er -ir verbs from our text and make flashcards as shown on this site. You have two days to memorize these verbs. You will then be tested on the verb conjugations.
Spanish Grammar - Regular Verbs Part Two
This site continues a basic introduction to regular verb conjugations. The site gives information about conjugating verbs in the second and third person, singular and plural.
- For class tomorrow know how to conjugate these verbs: hablar, comer, vivir in the the second and third person (yo, tú, él, ella, ustedes, ellos, ellas).
- Why is the vosotros form of the verb considered an optional skill to learn?
Spanish Grammar: Regular Verbs Part Three
This site completes the lesson on conjugations of regular verbs. The site includes a list of -ar -er -ir verbs.
- Review the rules for conjugating -ar -er -ir verbs. Memorize verb endings for each of the categories.
- Memorize the singular and plural subject pronouns. Which verb conjugations require the use of a subject pronoun? Why?
- You have one week to memorize the list of verbs given at the end of this site. You may want to make flashcards and use mnemonic devices (i.e. for the verb amar draw a heart; for the verb escuchar draw ears at the beginning and end of the verb).
- Students will stand in two rows facing each other. One set of students will have their flashcards. Teacher will allow students to drill their partner for 30 seconds. She will then ask students to move (i.e. move two students to the left; 3 students to the right) so that students will continue to drill each other. Periodically have students give their cards to their partner so drilling can be reversed.
- You have been drilling on these verbs for a week. Tonight you are to create a 20 point quiz for a fellow student. You are to use the verbs listed in this site. Write 10 sentences (subject pronoun and verb only) in English (i.e. He listens. She is helping.) Keep in mind the three possible meanings for verb conjugations. Write 10 sentences in Spanish. Remember which verbs require a subject pronoun, (i.e. Ella ayuda. Escuchamos.) You must have a sentence for each person. Please submit a rough draft of your test along with your answer key. Please use a word processor for this activity (students should learn how to add accents and tildes; or they may add marks with a pen).
- After reviewing rough drafts, teacher will return your test so that you may make your final draft. Students will take tests during class time and test authors will correct.
- Students will take the tests generated by fellow students. Tests and grading should be done during class time.
Regular -ar verbs
This is the perfect homework site. Students may generate a 10-25 point quiz which is corrected as part of the tutorial. The quizzes change continuously. An online translator provides definitions for verbs which may be new to students. I have found that parents like this site for students who need lots of practice and review drills. Teachers may register online and have test results e-mailed them.
- If teacher has a television attached to a computer these quizzes may be used during class time. Otherwise teacher may prepare an overhead using one of the quizzes.
- Please take two of the -ar verb quizzes and have results e-mailed to me(show students how this is done after you have registered for this service). If teacher prefers she may have students print out their test or the result sheet.
Regular -er verbs
This site is exactly like the previous site but drills students on -er verbs.
- Please submit via e-mail or printed copy, two different tests (15 questions) showing that you have mastered this verb conjugation. To master the skill I expect a grade of 100%. Practice makes perfect. The best way to learn verbs is to drill!
Regular -ir verbs
This site is similar to the previous sites. Again students may generate a quiz to test their mastery of this verb conjugation.
- Along with two 15 point quizzes (perfect score) I will ask that you write a sentence using one of the new verbs you learned. As I take attendance I will periodically ask for these sentences. Be sure to have the sentence written in your class notebook.
- Congratulations! Once you have submitted mastery tests for -ar -er -ir verbs you may go on to generate a quiz using all three verb categories.
Regular -ar -er -ir verbs
This site might be used as a pre-test or post-test to determine individual student's mastery. Since quizzes are changed often students may take tests outside of class.
- Students will take a 25 point quiz during class time. If teacher does not have a television attached to her computer she may make copies of the test or make an overhead. Based on test results teacher will assign additional work on the individual -ar -er -ir tests listed previously.
Spanish Verb Conjugations/Links to Grammar Exercis
Students are given a list of verbs to conjugate in the present tense. Instant feedback is given as to whether the verb has been conjugated correctly. Please note that the list of verbs includes some irregular verbs.
- Please note that some of the verbs listed on this site are not regular verbs. Teacher will let you know if you are to learn all verb conjugations or only regular verb conjugations.
- Tonight practice conjugating each verb in its entirety (all persons) before moving on to the next verb.
- Log in a subject pronoun then practice conjugating all verbs for that pronoun.
- Review all verbs. There will be a quiz tomorrow.
