Harvest Elementary Educational Technology Studies (Computers) - T. Hunter

Philosophy - The computer is a tool for managing information. It can simplify tasks such as accessing data and organizing ideas. Today’s students - tomorrow’s citizens need these skills earlier and earlier. It is the goal of the Harvest Elementary Educational Technology Studies computer program to prepare our students with these necessary skills. Meeting this goal requires many different elements.

Curriculum - The state and school district have identified the skills each student needs and the curriculum tools to teach those skills. The curriculum uses the Utah State Core objectives as its core. A list of these is available from the school. Keyboarding will be taught and reviewed yearly as an important life skill. The focus will be on word processing, using AppleWorks and Microsoft Word. An emphasis in all areas will be placed on problem solving, including databases, spreadsheets and presentations. AppleWorks and Power Point will be used for presentations. It is the philosophy of the computer program to make the use of the computer as practical in the other areas of the curriculum as possible. An emphases will be placed in integrating the computer into the content areas of the curriculum and reinforcing the content areas in the core classes.

Attendance - Harvest Elementary and Alpine School District attendance policies will be followed. Students should be to school on time and should bring a note indicating why he/she is late and a note indicating an upcoming absence and/or following an absence.

Absences - Students absent from school for any reason will be given two days to get the homework in for every absent day. Homework can be picked up after your student returns from the absence.

Harvest Elementary School recognizes the importance of homework for students as an extension of learning activities. In order to reinforce good study habits with appropriate homework, we have instituted the following homework policy. Homework should be completed and submitted by the homework due date. This practice will help your child develop responsibility and good study habits. School is where new skills are modeled. Homework gives your child the opportunity to respond to and practice these particular skills. Responsibility on the part of the family is the key to success.

Progress and Grades - All students K-6 will come to the computer lab and be instructed by the computer instructor. Skills rather than grades will be the main focus. Students will be encouraged to do the best they can. All students 1-6 will come to the computer lab daily for one quarter (approximately 45 days for 30 minutes daily) and will be graded by the computer instructor. Students will be graded on daily assignments. Full Name and Date count as part of the grade.

Test results - and major assignments corrected by the teacher or students will be returned to the student the same day as the test. If not the same day, then no later than three school days after the test has been taken. Most keyboarding assignments will be graded immediately following the student completing the work.

Late Work will receive a daily reduction in points up until 5 days after the due date. After this date, late work will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made with the teacher.

Grades - (letter, 3-6) will be given at the regular report card intervals. These grades will be determined by adding all the assignments, quizzes and tests together and dividing by the total points possible. As a general rule no homework will be expected from this class. Assignments will be recorded daily and the following key will be used: MWD = Missing When Due (Counts as zero until completed and turned in within a week of the due date. Work missed from an absence is the student’s responsibility to ask for.

Harvest Elementary grading scale - 93-100=A 90-92=A- 87-89=B+ 83-86=B 80-82=B- 75-79=C+ 70-74=C 65-69=C- 0-64=N

Progress Reports will be available any time accessing the Power School grading program. Parents can access his/her student’s grades through any of the following three ways:

1. The school web page - http://harvest.alpinedistrict.org and locate Mr. Hunter's Portaportal Page. This will provide grades through a Power School link, disclosure document and web sites that are used in the computer lab.
2. My Portaporal - my.portaportal.com
3. PowerSchool - http://powerschool.alpinedistrict.org
Students needing additional time to complete assignments may make arrangements with the teacher for time before and after the student’s school time.

Teacher Expectations - I expect the students to put forth a positive effort to be successful in class. Good citizenship and responsible behavior will also be expected.

Discipline - The Harvest Elementary School Discipline plan will be followed. The computer lab guidelines are as follows:

1. Follow Directions first time given/respond appropriately to a polite request.
2. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
3. No name calling, put downs or teasing.
4. Keep a low noise level.
5. Keep computer lab clean.

To encourage students to follow the rules, I will recognize appropriate behavior with praise, positive notes and phone calls home. Students who choose not to follow the lab guidelines and behave inappropriately will follow the school Think Time and lab hierarchy as follows:

1. Verbal Warning
2. Time out - 10 minutes and or/2nd Verbal warning
3. Think Time

Students should be in the right place, at the right time doing the right thing.

Parents - please send an email to me at thunter@alpine.k12.ut.us indicating that you and your student have read this disclosure document and any other time you need to communicate with me.

Thank You.
