Background: It is important that the leaf be dried so that it will not mold. A plant press helps preserve the shape and outline of the leaf while drying.

Materials:
6 -12 pieces of 12" by 18" cardboard
(Note: you may use smaller pieces of cardboard if you are working with small leaves).
2 pieces of 12" by 18" board
(Note: holes cut in the board allow humidity to escape while still providing a stiff "press").
2 Straps with sliding buckles
( Note: you may also use heavy duty rubber bands or a set of heavy books to hold the pressed leaves flat).
5 -11 dryers (could be double folded pieces of newspaper or felt).
scissors

Activity: Making the Plant Press
1. Cut the newspaper or felt into five or eleven 12" x 18" squares.

2. Place four sheets of newspaper or 1 sheet of felt in between each cardboard piece.

3.Place the two boards on the outside so that all the dryers and cardboard pieces are between the two outer boards.

4. Place the four rubber bands (or two straps) around the outside of the cardboard, so that the contents are secure and tight.
