    Remember:
  1. First, photograph the tree from which the leaf came
  2. Second, identify the leaf using a key appropriate for your area.
  3. Third, dry the leaf.
  4. Fourth, scan the dried leaf and upload the image to your adopted pond web site at http://www.uen.org/utahlink/pond/adopt.htm by clicking on the Update Your Pond link on that webpage.
  5. Fifth, Enclose the leaf in plastic and add it to your own classroom herbarium.
  6. Tell your parents to visit your classroom or the online herbarium project and see your scientific work!

Activity: Drying A Leaf

Carefully place the leaf in between four sheets of newspaper (2 Sheets on top, 2 on the bottom)or two sheets of felt. These are your "dryers".

Place the leaf and dryers between two pieces of cardboard (ventilators).

When the press is filled, put the two pieces of board around the outside.Secure the press with rubber bands or straps. Keep the press as tight as possible.

Place the press in a dry place and do not open for at least 48 hours (two weeks is the suggested drying time).

Remove the leaf and and mount them on paper using glue or tape. Scan this mounted leaf and submit the .jpg or .gif file to the online herbarium project.

Enclose the leaf between plastic sheet to keep out moisture. Add to your herbarium drawer or file.
