Eric Liddell, whose life was chronicled in the Oscar winning film Chariots of Fire, triumphed in the 400 metres at the Paris Olympics in 1924. Born in China of Scottish parentage, he returned to the country of his birth as a school teacher and missionary and, sadly, died in the closing years of the Second World War in a Japanese internment camp in Shandong province.
