Essential Questions:

What do today’s students really need to learn in order to succeed, not only in the classroom but also later on in college, careers, and as engaged citizens?

What’s the most effective way to personalize professional learning for our teachers?

How can we best convey the need for a pedagogical shift (Future Ready)? With administrators? With teachers? With parents/community?

Objectives:

Utilizing our collaborative knowledge, create a document about what’s working to successfully prepare the learners in your schools.

After discussing, share best practices for preparing future ready students, creating effective professional learning opportunities for teachers and admin., and communicating a clear vision.

What do you believe about how kids learn best?
“Our kids must be powerful, persistent, passionate learners to succeed in their lives, regardless of their pursuits” (Richardson, From Master Teacher to Master Learner, p.10).
What is it that our students need to gain from their public education experiences? What changes does Richardson propose? Do you agree or disagree? What would your students say? (This is Rachel's Linear discussion.)

How do we measure the ability to adapt?
Do we agree with Will?
How does the community feel about Will’s ideas?

Toole - Our kids creatively think and we are squishing them. - Greenhouse - clean it up - daughter wonders how much it costs to run the greenhouse. Daughter was interested and did the research on her own. Can we sell our produce. But our administrators and thinkers don’t always know what to do with this critical thinking when they think it. Informal learning is not always credited. Do I really care if my computer programer can do long division.
Dani- Does everybody really need to know how to use cursive or only researchers?
What do Kinders do when their pencils break? They sharpen it. We squish the critical thinking out of them.
JAY - When we train, how do we train. Are we adhering to Will’s philosophy? Wow, that’s a deep question.
We have different learner levels of comfort, in person, slow,
Move and grow as professionals.

Teresa - Legislators say we want education to look like the business model. But we do NOT look like the business model.
Teresa - Advocate for not only Twitter and Facebook but also look people in the eye and know persons. Are we blocks or teams?
The business people who were here from Adobe, etc., used the word team over and over. We liked the way they talked.

Carl spoke about Computing classes for middle school and high school teachers this summer. Endorsements, certifications and stipends available. Only 60 spaces open for teachers who will be teaching computing in their schools.
