Lesson Plans

Standard 3

Students will understand chemical bonding and the relationship of the type of bonding to the chemical and physical properties of substances.

Objective 1

Analyze the relationship between the valence (outermost) electrons of an atom and the type of bond formed between atoms.
  • Classroom Bonding
Students will be assigned an ion "name tag" and move around the classroom finding suitable other "atoms" to bond with. They will record the names of the new compounds and their formulas.
  • Conductivity and Bonding
Students will measure the conductivity of several compounds and solutions in order to predict the bond types (ionic or covalent) in the substances tested.
