Lesson Plans
Strand 1: History
Students will understand that history is the study of events, people, and places of other times.
Compelling Questions:
- Who are the people in our families and communites that we honor? Why are these people honored and remembered? Whom do we honor in United States history?
- Why are some events and people from history remembered?
- What are some of the ways families and communities remain the same over time?
- What are some of the ways families and communities change over time?
Standard K.1.1
Compare how people lived in earlier times and how their lives would be different today (for example, growing food, making clothing, living by different rules and laws).

A Book About Me
Each student will create a book about themselves using the book template.

Author Study of Patricia Polacco's Family Stories
Patricia Polacco's family stories provide an interesting and neutral way to begin discussions about families. Students can make connections from their own family experiences to some of her family experiences.

Building Friendships
These four activities will provide students opportunities to enhance friendships.

Celebrating Family Traditions
Students will learn about different family traditions and holiday celebrations from around the world.

Family Centers
This lesson plan provides many center activities that are designed around the idea of "families" and apply language and math skills.

Hello's Heard Around the World
Students will learn how to say hello in five different languages.

I Grow
The activities in this lesson will help students understand their surroundings and how they fit into their family, community, and the world.

Maori Stick Game
Students will learn about the Maori culture in the New Zealand area and play the Maori Stick Game.

Name Bingo
Activities focus on the importance of children's names and helps build a sense of community in the classroom.

Our Families, Yours, and Mine
The activities in this lesson plan will help students understand the similarities and differences in families and identify attributes in themselves and others.

Our School is a Community
The activities in this lesson will help students understand their surroundings and how they fit into their family, community, and the world.

Vacation Matrix
After illustrating the place where they spent their summer vacation, students will place their picture on a teacher created matrix.

What Does a Cowboy Do?
This activity is designed to familiarize students with the cowboy culture of the Old West and its presence in our modern times.
