Strand 8.3: LIFE SYSTEMS STORE AND TRANSFER MATTER AND ENERGY

Living things use energy from their environment to rearrange matter to sustain life. Photosynthetic organisms are able to transfer light energy to chemical energy. Consumers can break down complex food molecules to utilize the stored energy and use the particles to form new, life-sustaining molecules. Ecosystems are examples of how energy can flow while matter cycles through the living and nonliving components of systems.
  • 8th Grade Science OER Textbook for Utah SEEd Standards
The Utah Science Open Educational Resources (OER) textbook project was started to bring Utah teachers together to create a resource that aligns to Utah core science standards. The Utah Science OER textbooks are not intended to be curriculum as they do not include labs, assessments, or a teacher guide with answers. They are intended as a reference material for students with content to support teachers classroom instruction and help make sense of science concepts found in standards. This OER textbook is also available in other languages at https://www.uen.org/oer/index.shtml.
  • SEEd Storyline 8.3.1
Storyline Big Ideas: When given the right resources, plants grow. What does a plant need to grow?
  • SEEd Storyline 8.3.2
Storyline Big Ideas: The process of cellular respiration uses stored energy and rearranges matter to sustain life. How do our bodies release the energy in the food we eat and rearrange matter into new molecules?
  • SEEd Storyline 8.3.3
Storyline Big Ideas: Change in the resources of an ecosystem will affect the stability in the cycling of matter and flow of energy through an ecosystem. How would a change (ie building highways and homes or replanting vegetation etc) affect the stability of the ecosystem?
