Speaking and Listening Standard 2

Paraphrase portions of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.

• Aaron Shephard's Readers Theater
  A collection of stories that have been written for a reader's theater. Many of the stories include tips for presenting a reader's theater as well as other resources. A great resource for fluency practice.
• Slave Narratives: Constructing U.S. History Through Analyzing Primary Sources
  In these activities, students research narratives from the Federal Writers' Project and describe the lives of former African slaves in the U.S. - both before and after emancipation.
• Strategic Reading and Writing: Summarizing Antislavery Biographies
  In this lesson, students practice writing effective summaries using biographies.
• Traveling Terrain: Comprehending Nonfiction Text
  This lesson, from ReadWriteThink, teaches specific skills to students in order to improve their comprehension of nonfiction text found in website format. Strategies include locating specific information, identifying text features of nonfiction text, and generalizing information read to related topics. The lesson centers on a science-oriented website, but can be adapted to other content area websites.
• Why the Moon Paints Her Face Black
  This lesson was written in partnership with Dorena Martineau, the Paiute Cultural Resource Director, and was approved by the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utahs Tribal Council. Storytelling has been and continues to be a powerful tool used by Native American tribes to pass down cultural values, beliefs, and traditions. The winter season for many tribes is the time to gather and tell stories. The stories are passed down from one generation to the next and binds the members of the tribe together. Most stories teach a lesson or explain how things came to be. Entertaining your audience while sharing stories is a key element to this oral tradition. The Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah is pleased to share this book with the children of Utah. It is their hope that the book will be used to open doors to studying the ways of the Paiute and also to study the wonders of the sky.
