Social Studies - 6th Grade
Crispin by Avi
The novel Crispin, by Avi, is one of the best to demonstrate daily life of different social classes and the influence of the Catholic Church during the Middle Ages.
A good example of a manor map can be found in the front and back cover of the book The Seeing Stone: Arthur Trilogy Book One by Kevin Crossley-Holland.
This novel could be done as a read-aloud or as a group novel study if a class set of books is available. In Chapter 4, Asta's son is hiding high above the manor and describes what he is looking down on.
Students should note, on the Manor Notes Organizer, all of the different parts of the manor, the people on the manor, and the geographical features that are part of it or surround it.
Using their notes and the rubric provided, students should then create their own manor on a map. Grading will take into consideration the accuracy and understanding of vocabulary and placement of social classes.
