Summary

This short lesson teaches students how to find commission on stock purchases. The lesson includes a power point presentation as well as worksheets and answer keys.

Materials

This lesson requires you to show the Power Point Presentation (a computer and projector are necessary.)

Background for Teachers

This lesson assumes that students have been introduced to and used percentages. It is also helpful if they have a little knowledge about stocks.

Student Prior Knowledge

Basic knowledge of percentages.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Successful completion of this lesson will give the students the ability to perform a real-life example of percentages - finding commission.

Instructional Procedures

1. Have a short discussion about what is a stock and why you would want to buy stocks. 2. Show the Power Point Presentation to the class. Have the students try some of the problems presented in the presentation. 3. Answer any questions that students have about the concept. 4. Have the students complete the worksheet. 5. Grade the completed worksheets.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

This lesson is straight forward and accessible to most learners. The use of calculators will be necessary. For students who struggle try giving them easier numbers to compute. For advanced learners have them create their own problems, or have them solve the problems given but use different commissions.

Extensions

As noted above, this lesson can be extended by having students create their own problems, as well as changing the commission.

Assessment Plan

Attachments

After completing the Power Point Presentation have the students complete the following worksheet.
