Student Prior Knowledge

Understand sentence structure

Instructional Procedures

Using the current book being read or other materials, point out the different sentences. Define each of the four types of sentences and have student find each in their reading. Use the SB lesson to clarify understanding of the differences between the four sentence types or use as assessment.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

Using the SB lesson, students are able to receive feedback directly and will soon be able to distinguish the four types of sentences in whatever text is being read. The interactive nature of the SB will engage students, allow mistakes, and encourage all students.

Extensions

This lesson goes with the first Unit in Storytown for 4th graders.

Assessment Plan

There is automatic assessment as student make a choice and put each sentence in the correct Vortex. Automatic feedback---the kicking back of the sentence---if it is put in the wrong category helps students to then choose the correct sentence category.
