Summary

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a career field dedicated to providing emergency care to patients in an out of hospital setting. EMS will provide life saving care when people become injured or are ill, and transport them to the hospital. There are steps that anyone can do to help an ill or injured person before EMS arrives.


Materials

Permission Slip
Teddy bear for each student
Teacher computer and projector


Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Identify potential hazards that exist in the environment and demonstrate first aid and CPR skills.
  • Explore related career Pathways leading to college and career options.


Instructional Procedures

Preview video to make sure technology is working.

  1. Give the students each the permission slip and have them bring it back to school signed.
  2. Have each student bring a teddy bear to class. This will be the manikin they will be using in class to learn and practice their First Aid/CPR skills.
  3. Start the class by having the students watch the video "How to Perform CPR on a Baby with Dr. Jim Sears".
  4. There are a couple of different resources that are included in the lesson, for reference. The reference materials are the Adult First Aid/CPR/AED, and the Hands CPR Ready.
  5. Click on the Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED. Give the students the Emergency Medical Services Listening Guide.
  6. Go through the 12 PDF pages of the Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED with the students and have them complete the listening guide.
  7. After going through the 12 PDF pages and having the students complete the listening guide, go back through the pages with the students and have them perform the skills on their teddy bears that they have brought to class.
