Summary

This is an individual, or group if necessary, project that will allow students to integrate ipads with standard aligned science core.


Materials

Websites

  • MyOn
    Students can log onto myOn and choose books with all types of genres as well as levels.

Students will use an ipad and the Explain Everything app. Students will also use MyOn to research the water cycle as well as one water cycle video from YouTube to embed into their presentation.


Background for Teachers

The teacher needs to know components of the water cycle and the definitions for each compontent. The components of the water cycle for 4th grade are: transpiration condensation precipitation runoff groundwater evaporation water vapor


Student Prior Knowledge

before this lesson students should know how to login to myOn and search for books on the water cycle. Students will also need to know how to create a presentation on the app Explain Everything. Students will not only need to know how to create/begin their presentation, but will also need know how to add pictures, type, and embed videos within the Explain Everything app.


Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this lesson students will be able to describe the water cycle. (objective 2) Students will also be able to use technology tools such as presentation, cameras, and multimedia.(standard 5)


Instructional Procedures

The teacher will need to provide, or have it written on the board, a list of materials the students need to have in their lesson. The teacher will explain the assignment along with the expectations. (10-20 minutes) The students will start this assignment with the myOn website to search and research the water cycle. When students decide that they have gained enough knowledge about the water cycle they can start their presentation. Students need to have enough knowledge to be able to explain in detail each component of the water cycle. Students will use the Explain Everything app to start and finish their presentation. The water cycle presentation should have pictures, the water cycle words, and at least one YouTube video in their presentation. The students will have 4, 30 minute sessions to complete this project. ***If students need modifications for this lesson they will be put in groups. Groups will be determined by the teacher. When the students finish their presentation they need to submit it through there Google drive.


Strategies for Diverse Learners

Struggling students will have the opportunity to have the stories they choose read to them by the website myOn. Students can also be paired with other students so they can help each other. Students who need a challenge will be instructed to choose higher level text on myOn.


Extensions

Students can extend this lesson by not just describing the water cycle but be able to show the relationship between all the components in the water cycle. Students will also be able to attend our local water fair and learn detailed features on water in our area.


Assessment Plan

Students will be assessed on their individual (or group) projects according to the rubric. Students are also given a multiple choice/short answer test at the end of the water cycle unit.
