Students at home will discover how much salt it will take to make a hard boiled egg float.
- one hard boiled egg
- glass of water
- one to two cups of salt

- Students will, with parents supervision, hard boil an egg.
- They will let it cool, put it into a glass of water.
- Add salt one tablespoon at a time and stir until the egg floats.
- This is to be an inquiry lab. Do not give them these exact instructions. You many want to save a couple of the questions for the next day. They should be good at setting up and recording experiments at this point.
Check for amount of water and salt. Bring to the students attention that the amount of salt depended upon the amount of water.
