Summary

A balloon-covered flask with water in it is heated. Changes are recorded. There will be changes in the states of matter and a volume change while the total mass stays the same.


Materials

  • 150 ml flasks
  • 600 ml beaker
  • balloons
  • water
  • goggles
  • graduated cylinders
  • hot plates or alcohol burner and wire stand
  • triple beam balance
  • worksheet


Background for Teachers

Students will need to wear goggles during the entire lab.


Instructional Procedures

  1. TODAY is the day that I promised you was coming…..today you get to blow something up.
  2. Put 25ml of water into the Flask. Put the balloon over the top of the Flask. Fill the beaker to 100ml with water. Measure the Mass of the flask. Put on goggles.
  3. On the back of the student worksheet have them divide it into 8 areas. In the first area sketch the flask with the balloon.
  4. Plug in the hot plate, put the beaker on the hot plate. Put the flask with water into the beaker. Time for 10 minutes. Every 2 minutes sketch the balloon and the flask on the back of this paper
