Materials

Background for Teachers

Students have already determined the characteristics and functions common to all living things. This activity ties the cell organelles and organs/organ systems to the functions that they support. It is a good review or assessment after the class has covered the levels of organization of living things. The project can be done individually, but is also good to complete as partners.

Student Prior Knowledge

characteristics of life, major cell organelles , and organism organs and organ systems

Instructional Procedures

  1. To activate prior knowledge, brainstorm the characteristics of life as a large group and have students set up their own data table.
  2. Then choose one of the characteristics and have volunteers suggest organelles and organs that help provide those functions.
  3. Finally, have individuals or small groups complete the table.
  4. Have small groups share with other groups or in the whole group when finished.
