Student Prior Knowledge

Students should know that yeast reproduce asexually by budding or splitting in two. They will need help knowing how to handle lab equipment and how to set up a lab with only one variable in it.


Instructional Procedures

  1. Say "Yeast is a fungus that reproduces asexually. You are going to look at what affects the rate of reproduction by mixing a yeast solution and seeing how it expands in a test tube. By noting the starting point of your yeast solution and the end level, you can make an estimate of how much reproduction has occurred.
  2. You and your partner decide how you want to set up the lab.
  3. You will need a test tube for the "control" tube and for the "test" tube.
  4. Make sure that the tubes are different in only ONE way."
  5. Students complete the procedures on their worksheet.
